At least two more Family Dollar stores are confirmed to be closing in Jacksonville – the Downtown location and another in East Arlington.

The Downtown Family Dollar at 233 E. State St. and the East Arlington store at 1556 Monument Road are among the latest to post closure signs.

The Downtown store is closing at 7 p.m. May 25, a store clerk said. He said the closure was because of slow sales and that workers would be moved to other stores. Most of the merchandise in the store was gone May 20. Items were up to 75% off.

The store was one of the first Downtown Investment Authority projects, gaining a $364,000 incentive in 2013.

The Monument Road store, at northwest Monument and St. Johns Bluff roads, is almost empty of merchandise, also 75% off.

A sign on the door says it is closing at 7 p.m., but did not specify a day. The clerk said it would close when the merchandise was sold out.

A Family Dollar in another part of Arlington was the first confirmed area closure after parent company Dollar Tree Inc. announced March 13 it will close 1,000 stores nationwide.

Dollar Tree announced it would close 600 Family Dollar locations in the first half of fiscal year 2024 and an additional 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores at the end of their leases.

Dollar Tree has not released the list of stores it plans to close.

Including Dames Pointe, there are 48 Family Dollar stores in Jacksonville, according to familydollar.com.

Dollar Tree, based in Chesapeake, Virginia, bought Family Dollar for more than $8.5 billion in 2015.

CBSNews.com said the planned closures represent about 15% of its Family Dollar locations.

The news site said the retailer’s family of brands has struggled as inflation impacts its low-income shoppers’ budgets.

According to the site, Dollar Tree has said more customers are comparing prices at competing retailers to ensure they are getting the best deal, while more incidences of shoplifting are also hurting its bottom line.

Corporate.dollartree.com, a public company, says the company operates more than 15,500 stores across 48 states and five Canadian provinces. Stores operate under the brands of Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree Canada.
