Shayla Lee elected Duval County judge

All state Supreme Court justices and 5th District appellate judges retained in office.

Shayla Lee defeated Matthew Lufrano on Nov. 5 in the race for Duval County Judge in Group 9.

Out of 384,978 votes, Lee received 57.06% and Lufrano received 42.94%, according to unofficial results from the Duval County Supervisor of Elections website with all 160 precincts reporting at 11:20 p.m.

Born in Jacksonville, Lee graduated from Stanton College Preparatory School and Clark Atlanta University in 2008. She received a J.D. from Florida Coastal School of Law in 2015.

Lee began her career in child dependency law, working for the Guardian ad Litem legal team and later Children’s Legal Services. She then joined the Office of the Public Defender in the 4th Judicial Circuit, where she defended juveniles in delinquency court. Lee later worked in private practice but returned to the public defender’s office to defend felony cases in circuit court.

Other judicial results

In the 4th Judicial Circuit Court, Ashley Wells Cox defeated Nancy Cleaveland in the Aug. 20 primary election.

Fourteen 4th Circuit judges were elected unopposed in the primary election: Judges Steven Whittington, Jonathan Sacks, Thomas Beverly, London Kite, Katie Dearing, Maureen Horkan, Kevin Blazs, Robert Dees, Gary Wilkinson, Eric Roberson, Mark Borello, John Guy, W. Collins Cooper and James Kallaher.

State Supreme Court and 5th District Court of Appeal

State Supreme Court justices and judges in Florida’s appellate courts appeared on the Nov. 5 ballot for a vote for or against their retention on the bench.

Both State Supreme Court Justices on the ballot, Renatha Francis and Meredith Sasso, are retained for new six-year terms in office.

All 5th District Court of Appeal Judges on the ballot: Joe Boatwright, Eric Eisnaugle, Harvey Jay, Paige Kilbane, John MacIver, Jordan Pratt and Adrian Soud also are retained for new six-year terms.

According to the Duval County Supervisor of Elections website, 468,396 of the 649,929 registered voters in Duval County cast a ballot (72.07%)

As of 11:20 p.m. Nov. 5 when all precincts reported, 5,400 vote-by-mail ballots remained to be counted.
