The Main Street Bridge is set to experience some closures on its southbound side beginning Aug. 24, according to a release from Downtown Jacksonville nonprofit Downtown Vision Inc. Construction is expected to run from August through January 2027.
Southbound lanes on the bridge toward Riverplace Boulevard will be reduced to one lane, and the southbound pedestrian walkway will be closed for the duration of construction, according to DVI.
Northbound traffic will remain unaffected with two lanes of traffic throughout the project.
The closure takes effect to account for development of the second phase of Riverfront Plaza, adjacent to the bridge on the northbound side. The second phase of the park’s development is set to complete in mid-2027, and will include pedestrian access to the bridge.
The work beginning in August is the first step to establishing that pedestrian connection, a city of Jacksonville spokesperson said.
After its closure for the Riverfront Plaza construction, the bridge is expected to fully close for six months for a $100 million renovation project by the Florida Department of Transportation.
That closure would begin after July 1, 2027, FDOT said. Renovations will include replacement of the mechanisms at the top of the towers that raise and lower the bridge deck, replacement of the existing steel open grating with a solid surface and a fresh paint job.
