Melody Parker of Watson Realty cut her hair.

That’s not usually a big thing, we all cut our hair, but 28 inches of it?

Yes, that’s right.

“I cut off about 28 inches of my hair because I was getting too old to have it that long and I thought someone else needs it more than I do,” said Parker. “I wanted to donate it for people who have lost their hair due to cancer. I got a lot of satisfaction by knowing the someone who does not have hair might get some because of me.”

Parker donated her hair to Relay for Life, a benefit to raise money for the Cancer Society.

The last time Parker had a serious hair cut was in 1979 when the Farah Fawcett-style was in, but she didn’t like it and decided to let it grow long again.

“I will never grow my hair that long again, but my daughter is growing hers now so she can cut it off and donate hers also,” said Parker. “She is only four years old, but that is all she talks about since she saw me cut mine off.”

Before Parker’s father died of lung cancer in 1987, he had lost all of his hair.

“I feel like I am doing it for my dad,” she said. “He used to wear a hat so no one would see that he did not have hair.”

So, how did her cutting her hair affect business?

She said her customers and friends have been very surprised when they see her, but they have told her that she looks ten years younger.

“I am so glad I did it,” said Parker. “I hope other people that have long hair will do it too. It only takes 10 inches to make a wig for someone.”
