What fish weighs over 40 pounds and is worth $5,000?

It’s “Big Bubba,” one of several catfish now swimming in a Jacksonville pond awaiting the 7th annual “Catch Bubba” Catfish Tournament and Bar-B-Q on Saturday, Oct. 18.

For the sixth straight year, the Northeast Florida Builders Association donated “Big Bubba,” along with the 10 other large catfish, to make the annual charity event for the Downtown Ecumenical Services Council possible.

The fish were released Sept. 4 in preparation for the big event. NEFBA President Denise Wallace released “Big Bubba” into the Westside pond.

“This is a great partnership and shows what can be done when people work together. We are so proud to once again be involved with the Downtown Ecumenical Services Council in this fun, and very beneficial event,” said Wallace.

Money raised at this event will go to provide emergency food and financial assistance to local families in need. Over 5,800 families have been helped by the charity. In 2002, the DESC put groceries into the homes of 2,700 people, and helped another 486 families with utility and rent payments.

There are 100 fishing spots open with two people allowed in each spot.

If someone catches “Big Bubba,” they will win $5,000. If Bubba isn’t caught, a prize of $3,000 will go to whoever catches the largest catfish. Last year approximately 200 volunteers helped out, and 550 came out as spectators.

Jeffrey Crabtree, son on NEFBA member Jeff Crabtree, was last year’s big winner and was on hand for the release ceremony earlier this month.

Tickets are $25 per person or included in various fishing packages. Children 10 and under eat free, and are treated to activities including pony rides and face painting.

The event will be held at the Long Leaf Timber Company’s pond off Normandy Boulevard.
