The 9th annual edition of “Gingerbread House Extravaganza” opens today at the Jacksonville Historical Society’s Old St. Andrew’s, the former Episcopal church near the Baseball Grounds and Veterans Memorial Arena.
More than 30 creations made of gingerbread, candy and lots of sugar are being exhibited this year.
Several were designed and made by some of the region’s most experienced professional pastry chefs, while others were made by amateurs, including children.
Many of the designs reflect Jacksonville’s architectural history from as far back as Fire Station No. 1, now a residence at Adams and Ocean streets Downtown, to EverBank Field. Several are pure fantasies.
“The builders are so proud of their houses. You can see it in their faces when they bring them in. It really makes this fun,” said Robin Robinson, who chaired this year’s event committee.
The 2011 Gingerbread House Extravaganza is on display 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday through Dec. 22. There’s a suggested donation of $5 for adults and $3 for children. Proceeds will benefit the Jacksonville Historical Society’s programs. Free parking is available behind Old St. Andrew’s.
