The annual St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser always brings some added charm to St. Johns County.

The community recently celebrated its Fifth Annual St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser to support Jacksonville Area Legal Aid’s pro bono efforts for underserved people in the Seventh Judicial Circuit.

The fundraiser is sponsored annually on or near St. Patrick’s Day by Patrick Canan and the Canan Law Firm. The event was held March 15 and was both fun and successful for all those involved.

In a very real way, the efforts of the Canan firm help ensure that legal services for low-income individuals are available and comprehensive.

This year’s event raised more than $4,000 for the JALA St. Johns County’s pro bono efforts.

Pro bono attorneys are not expected to pay costs associated with representation in pro bono matters. Fundraisers, such as those organized by the Canan Law Firm, provide needed financial support, which is especially significant for sole practitioners and small firm attorneys.

In addition to providing reimbursement for case costs that may arise, such as the costs of depositions and document requests, money raised from the event will be used to fund professional training for St. Johns County pro bono attorneys. The fundraiser not only expands pro bono capabilities by paying these costs, it also improves pro bono advocacy by keeping information resources updated and making CLE webinars accessible to volunteers via the Internet.

The end result is that the number of attorneys who are able to volunteer increases.

Case costs may discourage pro bono volunteers from accepting cases. Financial donors can expand shrinking budgets to help keep pro bono programs strong and help ensure that the justice system accessible to all.

As populations grow, so does the need for pro bono advocacy.

With their leadership and the commitment displayed by members of its staff, the Canan Law Firm is a model of professionalism and responsibility.

It is a strong voice for people in need.

For information on how to volunteer in the Fourth and/or Seventh Judicial Circuits, attorneys are encouraged to contact Kathy Para, [email protected], chairperson, The JBA Pro Bono Committee.
