Downtown Vision Inc. has canceled the July First Wednesday Art Walk because the first Wednesday is July 4, a national holiday.
DVI Executive Director Terry Lorince said the organization polled Downtown vendors and the artists and determined that many venues might be closed for the holiday and artist participation might be less than usual for the once-a-month event.
Lorince said the July 2007 Art Walk also was canceled for the same reason. She also said it’s possible that early in the event’s eight-year history, an Art Walk might have been canceled on New Year’s Day.
The theme for the May 2 Art Walk is “Conservation, Fashion & Art,” combining recycling, National Bike Month and a fashion show, plus a celebration of the 450th anniversary of the landing of French explorer Jean Ribault at Mayport.
The June 6 Art Walk will be themed “Mad About Art,” when Downtown galleries will feature selected artists and their work.
Art Walk Aug. 1 has the theme “Be Our Guest,” a culinary event, followed by “Pet Walk” Sept. 5, “Hispanic Heritage” Oct. 3 and “Battle of the Marching Bands” Nov. 7.
The 2012 schedule will conclude Dec. 5 with “Art Under the Tree,” which will feature art as holiday gifts.
