It's hard to believe that the Young Lawyers Section of The Jacksonville Bar Association will host its 3rd Annual Charity Chili Cookoff in just three months.

The YLS will continue the tradition of fun, chili and charity from noon- 3 p.m. March 9 at Florida Coastal School of Law. The first two events were great successes, thanks to the generosity of Jacksonville's legal community.

There are many ways you can participate in the event.

First, you can be an event sponsor that allows you to include your company's logo on all of the event's promotional materials.

Next, you could break out your family's secret chili recipe and enter a team into the event. By entering, you receive admission for four and a chance to win the coveted Chili Cookoff trophy and its related bragging rights.

Or, you simply could attend the event and enjoy all that is has to offer. As with previous years, there will be beer, wine, desserts and live music to complement the several kinds of chili you will enjoy. There will be a bounce house and other entertainment for children. There is a $10 per ticket suggested donation for the event.

Finally, you could bid on the great items in the silent auction.

The YLS is committed to ensuring that the Chili Cookoff benefits the Jacksonville community. All funds raised from the event will be donated to local charities that use their resources to improve our community. Please watch for announcements from the YLS in the coming weeks, when it will indicate the event's beneficiaries.

Each team's chili will be judged by a distinguished panel of local judges.

Solomon Lodge No. 20 won the inaugural Chili Cookoff trophy and retained the hardware at the second year's event. Although Solomon Lodge serves up a delicious bowl of chili, we hope several teams will take the challenge of knocking off the two-time champions and stopping a three-peat. Please note that this year's event is open to the entire Jacksonville community, not just the legal community. All are welcome!

Cookoff, please contact Eric Roberson at (904) 858-3211 or [email protected] or Christine Bell at (904) 807-0182 or [email protected].

We expect the upcoming event to be bigger, better and more fun than past years. For those who have been to the past events, you know that is quite a large undertaking. Please mark your calendars for March 9 and we look forward to seeing you all there.

The YLS also has another great project coming up in January, our annual "Holidays in January" project.

It is designed to ensure each child placed in a Jacksonville foster home over the holidays receives a holiday gift.

The project is coordinated with the Northeast Florida Paralegal Association and Family Support Services.

Law firms, businesses and vendors are encouraged to make donations during the fall of each year. In the past, we have been able to provide new bicycles to about 30 foster children who otherwise might not have received a present for the holidays. But this cannot happen without your generous donations.

The project gives all involved a chance to brighten the holiday season for children in our community. This has been a tremendously successful project for the YLS and personally rewarding for all involved.

If you are interested in sponsoring and/or volunteering with the "Holidays in January" project, please contact Lindsay Tygart at (904) 399-1609 or [email protected] or Alexandria Hill at (904) 396-5500 or [email protected] for more information.
