As our community continues to face a tight economy and shrinking budgets, the Daily Record has established this feature that will each week chronicle the efforts of local nonprofit organizations.

Bailey Publishing & Communications invites all members of the local nonprofit community to email news, announcements and success stories to: [email protected].

We also encourage our readers to become more aware of the needs of these worthy organizations as they continue to provide valuable services with reduced resources.

Documentary to feature Fred Schultz

Leadership Jacksonville, a program that develops youth and adult leaders in Northeast Florida, recently hosted its annual Patron Appreciation Reception to honor past presidents, alumni and donors.

At the event, Leadership Jacksonville’s board President Jerry Mallot announced a nonprofit initiative by the organization called the “Jacksonville Legacy Series,” which will be an ongoing video series showcasing some of the region’s prominent leaders.

As part of the nonprofit project, Leadership Jacksonville will work with Kent and Pepper Lindsey of Lindsey Films to create the video legacy series. The first video will be made possible by a $20,000 grant from The Schultz Foundation and will feature its founder and Jacksonville leader, Frederick H. Schultz.

“We are proud to provide the leading grant for the series as we believe our local leaders have a legacy to pass along to future generations,” said Nancy Schultz, wife of the late Fred Schultz.

“It seems fitting that the first video be of Fred’s achievements and dedication to the community as he was the founder of Leadership Jacksonville and supported numerous educational institutions in our community. We are honored to be a part of this living legacy and hope this will help our community in the future,” she said.

Throughout his life and career, Schultz was dedicated to improving the quality of life in Northeast Florida and positively impacting the lives of those who lived in it.

Schultz’s career includes working for the CIA, Barnett Bank and founding several entities, including Platt Pontiac, Florida Trend magazine, and The Schultz Center for Teaching and Leadership.

His public service included serving as a member of the Florida House of Representatives and speaker of the House, where he sponsored legislation to create the University of North Florida and Florida State College, as well as serving as vice chairman of the Federal Reserve Board under President Jimmy Carter.

Schultz is perhaps best known for his work and dedication to improving education. He served on the Citizens Committee on Education, chaired the Florida Council on Education, served as a member of the National Council on Educational Research and chaired the Florida Institute of Education. He also created the Schultz Center, founded Leadership Jacksonville and created Jacksonville Community Council Inc.

Leadership Jacksonville hopes to create several videos of leaders each year and showcase them throughout the community.

“We are thrilled beyond words to receive the initial grant from The Schultz Foundation to start the Legacy Series and will be working hard this year to generate more grants and funding to keep producing the videos,” said Isabelle Owen Spence, executive director of Leadership Jacksonville.

Leadership Jacksonville is seeking funding and support for the Jacksonville Legacy Series. For information, call Spence at 396-6263. More information about Leadership Jacksonville is available at www.leadershipjax.org.
