An estimated 125 people gathered Thursday evening Downtown at the Museum of Contemporary Art for the inaugural Urban Land Institute North Florida Awards for Excellence.
The winners and categories were:
• San Marco Place, Downtown. San Marco Place is a 440,000-square-foot, 141-unit mixed-use condominium project on the Southbank. Developer Michael Balanky accepted the award. He and Jay Southerland developed the project.
• CSX 550 Water Street Relocation, Private Sector. Jacksonville-based CSX Corp. relocated more than 970 employees from 301 W. Bay St. to 550 Water St., next to its Downtown headquarters. Interior designer Leith Oatman of Gresham, Smith and Partners accepted the award.
• Riverside Arts Market, Public Sector. The weekly Riverside Arts Market began in 2009 along Riverside Avenue under the Fuller Warren Bridge overpass. Wayne Wood, founder of Riverside Avondale Preservation, developed the idea for the market and accepted the award. He called architect Melody Bishop to the stage to accept the award with him.
• Visionary Leaders Award. University of North Florida President John Delaney was presented the award for his use of urban growth management strategies at the UNF campus. Delaney, who served as Jacksonville mayor from 1995-2003, also was recognized for his growth management efforts, including the Preservation Project to buy land for preservation and for the Better Jacksonville Plan of capital, economic development and growth management improvements.
