“Did Santa think they were bad this year mommy?” my daughter asked me with a concerned look on her face.

This was her immediate inquiry to me when I explained that some boys and girls do not receive gifts on Christmas. This candid, innocent response stopped me in my tracks and opened my eyes to a completely new perspective.

Do children who go without gifts understand that it is most likely due to economic circumstances? Or do they think they were “bad” in Santa Claus’ eyes?

The Young Lawyers Section of The Jacksonville Bar Association is once again hosting its Holidays in January event Jan. 11 to ensure that more children do not have to contemplate those questions.

In years past, the Young Lawyers Section provided bicycles and holiday gift bags to children identified by Family Support Services. The Young Lawyers Section decided to spice it up this year by providing Razor scooters to the children.

Additionally, through the generous support of Driver, McAfee, Peek and Hawthorne and the Bedell Firm, the children will also receive helmets.

The Young Lawyers Section was able to secure a great venue change for the event this year. The event was historically held at Family Support Services’ facilities on Beach Boulevard. This year, The Young Lawyers Section Board has taken great strides to catapult this event to the next level.

Through the generous support of the Jacksonville Zoo and its board members, the party will be held at the zoo.

The zoo will give the children the space necessary to get out there and try out the scooters. Then, to top off this fabulous event, the children and their foster families will receive free admission to the zoo.

The event is so wonderful that Santa Claus himself will be making a special appearance to provide the children with goodie bags.

The new year is a great time to get involved with your local community and what better way than through the Young Lawyers Section of The Jacksonville Bar Association.

We have many great events coming up this year.

The Young Lawyers Section will again host its annual Chili Cook Off on March 1. There are many ways you can participate in the event.

You can either be a sponsor, enter a competing team or you can attend to enjoy the chili and festivities.

As with prior years, there will be beer, wine, desserts and live music to complement the several chili recipes you will enjoy. Proceeds from this event will be donated to a Jacksonville charity.

The Young Lawyers Section also will host a Date Auction in April.

This event will be co-hosted by the Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association.

At this event, many products, services and getaways will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Jacksonville Area Legal Aid.

The Young Lawyers Section will release more details about this event in the coming weeks.
