Community involvement: Jacksonville Ethics Commission and Justice Teaching

How did you become involved?

Jacksonville Ethics Commission: I submitted an application to the Ethics Commission a few years ago thinking I would never get called and three years later I am chairing the commission.

Justice Teaching: I read an article in the Bar news about Justice Teaching and signed up four years ago. It has been one of the most fulfilling things I have done. I was fortunate to be matched up to teach at my daughters' school.

How can someone else become involved?

The Jacksonville Ethics Commission meetings are open to the public. You can attend a meeting or contact the ECO office in the city c/o Carla Miller. Vacancies will be posted on our website, coj.net/departments/ethics-commission.aspx.

For Justice Teaching, you can contact the group at justiceteaching.org or just talk to Judge Karen Cole. In addition, the JBA is rolling out a similar civics education program so you can contact the JBA.

What have you learned/achieved through the experience?

Don't rely on politicians for leadership, fairness or objectivity. The best solution to voter apathy and a broken political system is civic education and engagement.

What was the last book you read or are reading?

"Undercover" by John Schilling. It is the story behind the brave whistleblower who exposed the prolific HCA health fraud scam.
