Bringing online shopping into a brick-and-mortar setting Downtown is the concept behind Grease Rags Clothing Co., Downtown's newest retail destination.
The store at 40 W. Monroe St., near Hemming Plaza and the Main Library, is stocked with lines of clothing, shoes and accessories that you don't find at other stores in Jacksonville, said owner and manager Cindy Platt.
"These are the clothes I like to wear and that my friends like to wear, but we couldn't find them in stores. I don't like buying clothes online, so I decided to open Grease Rags. You definitely won't find these clothes at Walmart," she said.
Platt stocks Lucky 13, Sour Puss, Broadminded, Rock Steady, Dickies and Too Fast clothing among other brands. Grease Rags is the only T.U.K shoes authorized dealer in Florida, she said.
The shop offers clothing, shoes and accessories for women and men.
"It's kind of pinup, punk, rockabilly and retro. It's an amalgamation of sorts," Platt said.
A former bank executive, Platt said the idea of opening a clothing store like Grease Rags has been on her mind for quite some time.
"It's something I've wanted to do since I was 15 years old and walked into Edge City in Five Points for the first time," she said.
The location was chosen because it fits the personality of the store and Platt's personality.
"Downtown has the edgy vibe that I enjoy. It's got the right feel," she said.
The store opened Thursday and Platt is planning a grand- opening celebration Wednesday to coincide with Art Walk. T-shirt designs by Cameron Nunez will be on display and she plans to keep the store open until the last customer leaves.
"I hope I'm here until midnight," she said.
Grease Rags Clothing Co. is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. A website is being developed. The shop is on Facebook.com/greaseragsclothingcompany.
