Community involvement: The Junior League of Jacksonville: JLJ is a community volunteer organization that I became involved with through a co-worker, Emily O'Leary. You won't find a more amazing, thoughtful and dedicated group of women anywhere in the country. To get involved, visit jljacksonville.org/ or contact (904) 387-9927.

L'Arche Harbor House Jacksonville: L'Arche is a community with five family-style homes, a community center and an off-site day program where people with intellectual and physical disabilities can share their gifts with the lucky volunteers (like me) who are given the opportunity to work with them. To get involved, visit larchejacksonville.org/learn/mission/ or contact (904) 721-5992.

The Mayo Clinic: I volunteer twice a month assisting patients and the hospital staff in the Emergency Department of the Mayo Hospital. The Mayo Clinic has numerous volunteer opportunities for people with varying talents and schedules. I am truly proud to be one of their treasured volunteers. To get involved visit mayoclinic.org/volunteers-jax/ or contact (904) 956-0074.

Jacksonville Area Legal Aid: JALA provides legal services to those who cannot afford them. Their new building was named after one of my favorite mentors, Justice Major B. Harding, who I had the pleasure of working with as a legal intern at Ausley & McMullen, P.A. He has selflessly given advice to many people over the years, including myself, as does the tremendous group of attorneys and volunteers at JALA. To get involved, visit jaxlegalaid.org/ or contact (904) 356-8371.

How did you become involved?

When I decided to forgo my career in interior design to pursue a law degree, I vowed to use my newfound skills and lifetime of interesting experiences to give back to the community as soon as possible. Upon graduating from law school, I chose to call Jacksonville home and immediately sought unique opportunities to get involved in the local community. These allowed me to assist people in need while also learning about things to which I had not otherwise been exposed. To my surprise, I receive far more in return for volunteering than I could ever give. "You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give." – Sir Winston Churchill
