A Boston developer has kicked off construction at a 2,000-home community on County Road 210 in St. Johns County.

Freehold Communities has begun development of Shearwater, a master-planned community that will embrace “healthy living, engagement, connectivity, stewardship of nature and distinctive design,” the company announced.

The 1,500-acre community will include 400,000 square feet of commercial retail, a K-8 school and 600 acres of open space.

The community will be west of Interstate 95.

Amenities will include a canoe/kayak launch, parks and trails, a fitness lodge with a resort-style swimming pool, water tower, lazy river, sports fields and tennis courts.

Builders so far are David Weekley Homes, Lennar and MasterCraft Builder Group.

Phase one is expected to open in the fall this year.
