Publix Super Markets Inc. continues its Northeast Florida refurbishment with plans to remodel its Jacksonville store at the Medical & Merchants Center at San Pablo.
The project boosts the Lakeland-based grocer’s investment in Northeast Florida store renovations to at least $17.15 million in construction costs alone over the past 21/2 years.
Publix has submitted plans or completed renovations or reconstruction on at least 18 area locations.
Elkins Construction LLC is the contractor for the proposed $750,000 renovation of the Publix store at 14444 Beach Blvd., at southeast Beach Boulevard and San Pablo Road. Property records show the store comprises at least 62,000 square feet of space. It was developed in 1993.
Publix regularly updates its stores. The cycle coincides with new and expanding competitors in the Northeast Florida market, such as Trader Joe’s, Aldi, Whole Foods, Earth Fare, Fresh Market, Sav-A-Lot and Walmart, as well as the reconstructed pilot Winn-Dixie store in Baymeadows.
Memorial Healthcare to demolish Mandarin Mill Family Golf Center
Memorial Healthcare Group Inc. and Burkhalter Wrecking Inc. applied to the city to demolish the former Mandarin Mill Family Golf Center for development of a free-standing emergency room.
Memorial Healthcare wants to clear the site at 10910 San Jose Blvd. at a cost of almost $76,000.
Memorial Healthcare previously applied for a permit for the $5 million construction project. It paid $2 million for the almost 2.6-acre site to build the emergency room at southwest San Jose Boulevard and Interstate 295.
The full-service emergency facility is expected to be completed this fall. The 24-hour center will be Memorial Hospital’s third free-standing emergency department and its fourth ER, including its main campus at 3625 University Blvd. S.
The former Mandarin Mill is closed and the structure, batting cages and other functions will be removed. The proposed medical clinic is shown at 10,820 square feet with 44 parking spaces.
Take me out to the tiki bar
The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville is being spruced up in preparation of the Jacksonville Suns’ opening day April 7.
The city is reviewing a permit application that specifies a new tiki bar at the northwest corner, a bullpen terrace and renovations of the existing lounge.
Birken Construction Inc. is the contractor for the proposed $450,000 project at 301 A. Philip Randolph Blvd.
The Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins opens the season at 7:05 p.m. April 7 under new ownership. Ken Babby of Fast Forward Sports Group bought the franchise from former Suns president and owner Peter Bragan Jr., whose family owned the team since 1984.
Waffle House making way to San Jose
Waffle House is taking another step toward developing a restaurant in Mandarin at 11839 San Jose Blvd., south of Loretto Road.
Waffle House Inc., based in Norcross, Ga., applied to the St. Johns River Water Management District for the property, which will include an Express Oil Change on the 1.25-acre site.
Taylor & White Inc. is the civil engineer.
The Express Oil Change is a multi-building project of about 6,000 square feet and the 38-seat Waffle House will be 1,635 square feet.
Family Dollar plans Mayport store
A new Family Dollar store is in development for the Mayport area.
The city is reviewing permits for site demolition and construction for a Family Dollar at 2440 Mayport Road.
HJB Construction Inc. is the contractor to demolish an existing building at a cost of $38,000 and to build the 8,424-square-foot Family Dollar at a construction cost of $700,000.
