With more than $11 million in work underway, the Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center is in review for a $123 million permit for the bulk of its construction project in San Marco.

DPR Construction of West Palm Beach and PerryMcCall, in partnership, are the contractors for the more than 330,000-square foot addition to the existing center.

The new nine-story building is being built at 1301 Palm Ave. It is under development on two blocks across San Marco Boulevard from the current MD Anderson center at 1235 San Marco Blvd., which opened in October 2015.

The total $180 million project should be open by mid-2018. Permits so far total $134 million, including the application.

The permit shows a 10th-floor penthouse for electrical and HVAC equipment. Ground-breaking was June 23.

The construction includes a four-story parking deck for 600 vehicles and a bridge across San Marco Boulevard to the existing center.

Baptist Health said the addition “will dramatically expand the comprehensive cancer care available and provide inspiration and hope for cancer patients through state-of-the-art cancer treatment.”

The project, announced in September 2014, continues MD Anderson’s cancer expertise and Baptist Health’s comprehensive health system, it said.

The center will feature medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, physician specialists, nurses and clinical support staff, Baptist said.

Patients are assigned clinical nurse navigators to guide them through the process and serve as a single point of contact throughout their care.

Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center is organized as 10 cancer clinics to each treat specific cancer types.

Construction on the addition was approved Sept. 9 with the foundation received its permit. Large buildings can be permitted in stages.

When Baptist Health and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center announced the partnership, they said Baptist Health will become a partner member in the MD Anderson Cancer Network.

Hugh Greene, president and CEO of Baptist Health, called the partnership a game-changer.

MD Anderson, based in Houston, says it is the largest freestanding cancer center in the world. It opened in 1941.
