Jacksonville Building Inspection Division Chief Tom Goldsbury announced that he will retire from the city July 19.

Legislation was introduced to City Council to confirm Mayor Lenny Curry's appointment of Building Inspections Manager Joshua Gideon as the next chief of the division, which is part of the Jacksonville Planning and Development Department.

Resolution 2019-404 states Gideon would take the position July 20.

“Working for the City of Jacksonville has been the most rewarding job I have ever had,” Goldsbury said in an industry bulletin email to about 1,700 subscribers.

“My sincere thanks goes out to (retiring city Chief Administrative Officer) Sam Mousa for hiring me back in 1992, and giving me the opportunity to be Chief of the Building Inspection Division in 1998,” Goldsbury said.

“This position fit me perfectly, my philosophy has always been to help the customer get what they needed to achieve, while being safe and mindful of others,” he wrote.

He also thanked the past and present Building Inspection Division staff. “I wouldn’t have lasted this long without your help,” he said.

Goldsbury said he will return part-time in August to work on special projects, specifically the development of the city's new permitting system.
