It appears John Delaney will become the fifth president of Flagler College in St. Augustine.

“In July, Interim President Delaney began a one-year term. During this time, the Board has had an opportunity to meet with him both in individual meetings and in scheduled board meetings,” Beth Sweeny, Flagler spokeswoman, said in an email.

“Through those discussions, it has become clear that he has the experience and vision that is needed to move the College forward at this pivotal point in time.”

She said the Board convened a special meeting and made a resolution that will be voted on at its Oct. 21 meeting.

“The resolution calls for John Delaney to be named the fifth president of Flagler College,” she said.

Delaney, who became Flagler’s interim president after former President Joseph Joyner retired, declined to comment until after the board votes on the resolution.

The post at Flagler would be Delaney’s second presidency in higher education in Northeast Florida.

Delaney was president of the University of North Florida from 2003 to 2018, during which the building space increased by 168% and the campus size increased by 116%.

As UNF’s chief fundraiser, Delaney more than doubled the privately funded endowment and led a capital campaign that exceeded its goal, raising more than $130 million.

He also created programs and services to assist specific student populations including the LGBT Resource Center, the Military and Veterans Resource Center and the Disability Resource Center and led UNF’s transition to NCAA Division I athletics.

Delaney is a former city of Jacksonville general counsel, chief assistant state attorney in the 4th Judicial Circuit, a two-term mayor of Jacksonville and former interim chancellor of the State University System of Florida.

He is counsel at Rogers Towers, where he practices in the firm’s Government and Regulatory Law Department.
