Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera will run in 2016 for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by presidential candidate Marco Rubio.

In a YouTube video, Lopez-Cantera announced his decision to run and touted the economy.

“We’ve proven conservative principles work — less taxes, less government and more freedom,’’ the Republican said in the video, which was reported on the Miami Herald political blog early Wednesday.

Lopez-Cantera is slated to make a formal announcement during an event Wednesday afternoon in Miami when and his wife, Renee, will be at All American Containers Inc. in Miami, according to an invitation from the Republican Party of Miami-Dade County.

Northeast Florida Congressman Ron DeSantis and Orlando businessman Todd Wilcox have already started campaigning for the Republican nomination, while other potential GOP candidates include Tampa Bay-area Congressman David Jolly and Northwest Florida Congressman Jeff Miller.
