City permits construction for Blue Bamboo II at a cost of almost $2.2 million

The Angelo Group is renovating and expanding a former Mandarin law office for chef Dennis Chan’s second area restaurant.

The city issued a permit Monday for chef Dennis Chan to renovate and expand a former law office he bought in Mandarin for Blue Bamboo II, his second area restaurant.

Chan said previously he hoped to open Blue Bamboo II next summer.

The Angelo Group Inc. is the contractor for the $2.19 million project to convert and expand the building at 10110 San Jose Blvd. into a 7,401-square-foot restaurant for Chan.

Chan, through Blue Bamboo Land LLC, paid $899,000 for the property in November.

Chan bought the property from William H. Jeter Jr., John S. Duss IV, Theresa M. Kenney and Michael Taylor Bowlus, the deed shows.

The 4,300-square-foot building was built in 1978 on 1.05 acres at northwest San Jose Boulevard and Haley Road.

Construction and site-clearing permits total almost $2.25 million. Chan will add a kitchen and bar.

Tom Ranney is designing the interior. Chan said Meek Development Group Inc., which is managing the project, brought in a team that includes Doherty Sommers Architects Engineers and EnVision Design + Engineering. 

Chan opened the original Blue Bamboo, tag-lined a “Hip Asian Kitchen,” 14 years ago at 3820 Southside Blvd.

Blue Bamboo II will serve favorites from the original Blue Bamboo menu, along with some classic Cantonese dishes from his family’s restaurants.

He is adding features. For example, the display preparation kitchen will feature collectibles, such as the baker’s table from the former Worman’s Bakery Downtown. Chan said the table will be refurbished and used.

Guests at the bar will have a clear view of the kitchen through a long picture window. The dining room will offer seating options for private parties of 12 to 150 guests. Chan said Blue Bamboo II will have a separate takeout area, with curbside pickup spaces.

Community First Credit Union financed the deal.
