The company overseeing the planned Nov. 14 implosion of the unfinished Downtown Berkman Plaza II high-rise filed a permit application with the city to set up temporary food and beverage tents to support demolition crews.

The city is reviewing a permit application from Pece of Mind Environmental Inc. to set up two 20-by-40-foot tents on the city-owned Shipyards property at 750 Bay St. next to the Berkman II.

According to permit documents, the tents would cost $1,800 and be up from Nov. 12-15 to protect food and beverage products brought in by an outside vendor.

The tents would be provided by the Jacksonville-headquartered party rental company All About Events.

The setup will include temporary toilets but no electricity or generators.

The application is another signal that the implosion is moving forward.

Berkman site developer Jacksonville Riverfront Revitalization LLC and Pece of Mind are working with Controlled Demolition Inc. of Phoenix, Maryland, to bring down the shell structure at 500 E. Bay St. between 8 a.m.-9 a.m. Nov. 14.

Development company co-manager Park Beeler announced at a news conference Oct. 11 that the implosion was delayed from Oct. 17, citing supply chain issues with blast components.

PB Riverfront Revitalization of Jacksonville LLC, a company controlled by the developer, bought the land and 14-year-old building shell on April 21 for $5.503 million and plans to redevelop the site.

Beeler says shifting to implosion from the previous plan of conventional demolition will increase the total job cost to about $2 million, up from the $1.09 million cost shown on the city permit portal.

Jacksonville Riverfront Revitalization is working with KBJ Architects on a plan to redevelop the site with a $130 million to $150 million multifamily mixed-use project.
