Lakesha Burton has resigned as director of community initiatives for Mayor Donna Deegan’s administration.

The city announced her resignation Oct. 24 in a news release.

She is leaving the city to focus on the health of her husband, Greg Burton, the release said.

Burton was appointed in July 2023 to lead prevention and intervention programs that build safer communities.

A candidate for Jacksonville sheriff last year, she served for 24 years in the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, rising to the rank of assistant chief.

Deegan said Burton would help the mayor’s office interact with the Sheriff’s Office.

“The Burtons are in our hearts and our prayers as Greg faces unexpected health challenges,” Deegan said in the release.

“I am incredibly grateful for Lakesha’s service to Jacksonville both in the Mayor’s Office and over 24 years with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. She is a passionate and dedicated public servant who cares deeply about our community. I look forward to working with her in the future.”

Burton’s resignation is effective immediately.

“I thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve in your administration,” she said in her resignation letter sent Oct. 24.

“I genuinely felt that I had a great opportunity to move your vision for a thriving community forward. However, the unexpected health challenges my husband is facing require me to step back from my role as a full-time employee. I am open to considering other ways to continue serving you and our city,” Burton said.
