The Downtown Investment Authority announced Aug. 19 it is launching its Storefront Facade Grant program, allocating $950,000 to support renovations of street-facing exteriors on buildings in the Downtown Jacksonville Historic District.

The Downtown Historic District comprises 158 acres on 56 blocks bordered by Beaver Street on the north, Liberty Street on the east, Pearl Street on the west and the St. Johns River on the south.

The program is focused on the exterior of buildings, rather than the interior, which the DIA’s Retail Enhancement Grant program is meant to support, the news release said. It also can apply to second-story facades.

“We are determined to improve the appearance of our Historic District in Downtown,” DIA CEO Lori Boyer said in a news release.

“This program helps building owners renovate deteriorating windows, doors, siding and the like without requiring historic designation which has been a deterrent for some. We are hopeful this added incentive will be what it takes to encourage owners to invest in exterior improvements that not only increase their building value, but also enhance walkability and overall Downtown values,” she said.

Applicants can receive up to $30 per square foot, with a maximum grant of $75,000 per applicant. Buildings must be at least 50 years old, but do not need to be designated historic landmarks.

The grants are a five-year, interest-free, forgivable loan. The grants are payable upon completion of the project.

Grant recipients will need approval from the city Downtown Design Review Board,  Planning and Development Department and other necessary agencies before starting construction.

The DIA board approved the program June 17.
