Retro Fitness announced in October that former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard and his wife, Mary, would open three of its gyms, and the first would open within a year.

That’s on track for Harbour Village, near Queen’s Harbour Yacht & Country Club.

Plans for Retro Fitness are in review for a location at 13475 Atlantic Blvd. The gym would open in 13,776 square feet after a $400,000 build-out.

The 10-year-old Retro Fitness chain was founded by entrepreneur Eric Casaburi, growing from a regional Northeast concept to a national chain with 110 operating units, according to retrofitness.com.

Retro Fitness, based in Colts Neck, N.J., has franchise territories available in all 50 states.

In October, Retro Fitness said expansion plans called for 300 gyms in the next three years and growth into new markets within the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and California, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Salt Lake City, and Washington, D.C.

Garrard, 36, was starting QB from 2007-10 for the Jaguars, which drafted him as a fourth round pick in 2002 following his graduation from East Carolina University.

Metro Diner seeks permit at Baymeadows Village

Metro Diner, the Jacksonville-based chain of breakfast and lunch restaurants with an eye on expansion, applied for a construction permit to remodel space in Baymeadows Village for its fifth area restaurant.

MD Southside LLC wants to renovate 3,641 square feet of space at 9802 Baymeadows Road at a project cost of $311,000. Panera Bread also operates in Baymeadows Village, which is a strip center at Baymeadows Road and Southside Boulevard.

Metro Diners already operate in San Marco, which is the original, and in Mandarin at Julington Cree, in Roosevelt Square and in Jacksonville Beach.

The Davoli family, which started the Metro Diner chain, has partnered with a Tampa-based investment group to assist with its growth.

The next two Metro Diners are the Baymeadows Village location and another could be in St. Augustine.

Future markets could include Orlando, Tampa, Ormond Beach and Tallahassee.

The first four restaurants are open 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily.
