Panera Bread is renovating at least five of its Jacksonville restaurants at a cost of $400,000.
Pending permits show that the Panera Bread Café restaurants will be re remodeled at 13740 Beach Blvd., at Beach and Hodges boulevards; 8635 Blanding Blvd. in the Argyle Village area; 9301 Atlantic Blvd. in the Regency area; 13271 City Station Drive in River City Marketplace; and 4720 Town Crossing Drive in the St. Johns Town Center.
Each permit calls for a tenant build-out and minor interior remodel at a cost of $80,000 each.
The “limited scope” remodels include construction of a full-height wall with pass- thru at the service line; re-work of the service-line equipment and lighting; and installation of a banquette across from the order-status monitor, ordering kiosk stations and reach-in beverage cooler at the bakery.
A spokeswoman said by email the company has no comment.
Panera Bread, which is based in St. Louis, has at least 12 restaurants in Duval County and at least 16 total in the five-county area. As of April 30, the company’s 1,800 bakery-cafes in 45 states and in Ontario, Canada, operated under the Panera Bread, Saint Louis Bread Co. or Paradise Bakery & Café names.
Golden Corral to build West Jacksonville location
Golden Corral Buffet & Grill applied for a construction permit to build a $1.3 million restaurant in West Jacksonville at 1201 Memorial Park Drive, at Normandy Boulevard.
The 11,486-square-foot restaurant is planned on 2.58 acres and will replace the Golden Corral that now operates at 7043 Normandy Blvd.
Golden Land Properties of Jax LLC of Orange Park is the property owner. North Coast Construction Co. is the contractor.
There are five Golden Corrals in the area. The others are in Mandarin, Arlington, Southside near Tinseltown and Orange Park.
Janet Murphy with Cardinal Corral of Jax Inc. said she and her husband, Rick Eggemeyer, are single-unit franchisees and will relocate the Normandy location by the end of December.
The new store will seat about 400 guests and employ about 115 people, which is 10-15 more than the staff at the existing store.
Murphy said the current Normandy location is the only Golden Corral in the city to offer breakfast seven days a week and the new restaurant will continue to do so.
Murphy said her husband was recruited to open the first Jacksonville Golden Corral in 1995 on San Jose Boulevard and opened the second in 1996 in Orange Park. In 2000, he was promoted to district manager and left the position in 2002 to become an operating partner at the Normandy store.
In April 2008, the couple earned the opportunity to buy the location and become franchisees. Murphy’s background was 20 years with YUM brands (KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut) before starting the Golden Corral franchise.
She said the other area locations are owned by Golden Corral Corp.
Corner Bakery build-out pending
Corner Bakery Café plans a $523,875 interior build-out for its new Downtown area restaurant at 192 Riverside Ave. in the Shoppes on Riverside.
The pioneering commercial development will bring a Fresh Market and other retail shops and restaurants to property between two new apartment communities, all designed to transform a high-profile location in the Brooklyn neighborhood.
Danis Construction LLC is the contractor for the Corner Bakery Café, which consists of a 4,025-square-foot restaurant along with a 1,133-square-foot patio area, according to the building-permit application.
It would be the first Jacksonville café for the Dallas-based company and is expected to open late this year.
Corner Bakery Café intends to open its second Jacksonville restaurant in Southside at 7111 Bonneval Road, next to Edwin Watts Golf, at Butler Boulevard and Philips Highway. Edwin Watts Holding Co. is the landlord. The 167-seat café is at the northern end of the building.
The city is reviewing plans for tenant improvements for the Southpoint Corner Bakery Café in more than 4,300 square feet of space, along with an outdoor patio. The project cost is $550,000.
Corner Bakery Café is a fast-casual restaurant that offers made-to-order breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as catering.
In September, the company said it plans to open as many as 10 restaurants in the Northeast Florida area as part of a multi-unit restaurant franchise agreement with Lee Wesley Group LLC,
Deerwood Publix renovating façade
Publix Supermarkets applied for a permit to renovate the façade of its Deerwood store at 9964 Old Baymeadows Road. McIntyre Elwell & Strammer General Contractors Inc. is listed as the contractor for the $495,000 project.
That store is one of at least 10 that Lakeland-based Publix is renovating in Jacksonville. Publix is remodeling the almost 47,000-square-foot store at a project cost $350,000.
GFS Marketplace construction plans filed
Construction plans are in review for the area’s first GFS Marketplace by Gordon Food Service.
The city is reviewing plans for the 16,846-square-foot project at 13423 Beach Blvd. Documents show a grocery store including aisles of shelves, a freezer and cooler, prep room and stock room, checkouts, a customer-service center and offices.
Cuhaci & Peterson Architects of Orlando is the architect. No full construction cost was listed.
The city previously OK’d a permit for Arwood Waste Inc. to remove a building at 13427 Beach Blvd. to make way for construction of the area’s first GFS Marketplace at Beach and Hodges boulevards.
Gordon Food Service is a Grand Rapids, Mich.-based restaurant supplier that operates more than 165 marketplace stores in 10 states, including at least 14 in Florida.
The stores sell food and products in large quantities but do not charge a membership fee like warehouse clubs.
Pinnacle Real Estate Inc., the developer of the proposed GFS Marketplace, bought almost 2.9 acres on Dec. 23 for the project. Pinnacle Real Estate also is based in Grand Rapids.
