Volunteers from Publix gave time and muscle to complete projects during the annual Publix Day of Caring.
Volunteers beautified schools and campuses of United Way of Northeast Florida funded agencies.
They also improved a Nassau County resident’s house and served meals to area homeless.
Grace period ends for 5 red-light cameras, begins for 3
The grace period for violations at five red-light cameras has expired, meaning offenders will now receive tickets.
The locations are: westbound approach to Beach and Hodges boulevards; and eastbound and westbound approaches to Beach and Kernan boulevards; and Southside Boulevard and Hogan Road.
Three cameras are now in the grace period phase of installation. They are at 103rd Street and Ricker Road; Fouraker Road and Normandy Boulevard; and Lane Avenue and Normandy Boulevard.
Head of college football playoff system at Oct. 22 luncheon

Bill Hancock, executive director of the program, is the speaker at the Jacksonville Sports Council’s Oct. 22 luncheon at the East Club at EverBank Field. The event starts at noon.
ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit was the speaker at the council’s first luncheon in the Speaker Series, which was sold out.
Hancock is ranked fifth on Forbes’ World’s 7 Most Powerful People in Sports list.

Two Jacksonville residents on Alzheimer’s board
The Central and North Florida Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association appointed two board members from Jacksonville.
Mitch Hunt is president and CEO of FirstAtlantic Bank, leading the company since 2007 from a startup to a community bank with more than $400 million in assets. Hunt also serves on the board of directors of the Florida Bankers Association.
Seth Phelps, assistant general counsel of Florida Blue, is an active community leader, volunteer and expert in the Affordable Care Act. Phelps is the lead attorney for interpreting the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act for Florida Blue.
NAACP’s annual dinner is Oct. 23
The Jacksonville branch of the NAACP is holding its 49th annual Freedom Fund Dinner at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront.
Keynote speaker is Donna Brazile, a veteran Democratic political strategist and vice chair of voter registration and participation of the Democratic National Committee. The dinner honors residents involved in civil rights issues and students who are semi-finalists in the National Achievement Scholarship program.
