Pro bono attorney B.J. Taylor accepted a guardianship case during the No Case Left Behind effort of Celebrate Pro Bono week.

She was drawn to the case because of her own family experience.

In a little over five hours of effort, she helped a family establish guardianship to help a mentally ill loved one live a full life.

We call that an excellent return on investment. Taylor’s description is included here.

What were the basic facts of your case?

The client needed to obtain guardianship of her mentally ill adult brother. Her brother had been declared incompetent years ago and her mother, who had passed a few years ago, had previously obtained guardianship of him.

Prior to then, she knew she needed to obtain guardianship but she didn’t know how and it hadn’t seemed to be much of an issue because her brother was safely placed.

However, her brother had recently relocated back to Jacksonville, found himself in some trouble, having medical issues and needing help — even though he didn’t think he did.

What were you able to accomplish for your client?

Since the client’s mother had previously obtained guardianship we were able to obtain guardianship of the client’s brother fairly quickly. Once the client and I got in contact, we completed the guardianship in about one week.

Why was the outcome important to your client?

It was important for the client to have guardianship so she could help her brother make important decisions regarding his health and well-being.

As a mentally ill adult, he did not always make decisions that were in his best interest or the best interest of those around him.

As a result, he found himself in legal trouble several times, which was not good for anyone.

Why was the experience important to you? That is, what did you gain from the experience?

I, too, have a mentally ill adult sibling, so when I read the facts of the case I immediately felt the need to help the client.

I was able to understand her concerns and frustrations with our mental health system and her strong desire to be able to help her brother by making sure his medical providers were making the best decisions for him.

What is the name of your firm? In what areas do you practice?

I am a partner at Boyd & Jenerette and I practice in the defense of mass torts, wrongful death, trucking liability and negligence.

What advice do you have for other attorneys considering pro bono involvement?

I know it sounds cliche, but just do it. It is a great way to give back to our community and it truly makes a huge difference in the life of the client you help.

Even if it is just one case, it is still one person/family you helped.

Because of Taylor’s effort, her client will receive the protection and supervision of a caring family member. Sincere appreciation is extended to Taylor and all pro bono attorneys stepping up for vulnerable and low-income people with case representation and with assistance in outreach events.
