Bakery-cafe Panera Bread announced it will open May 20 in the Beachwalk master-planned community in Saint Johns.

The restaurant is at 55 Beachwalk Shore Drive near Old County Road 210. It is northeast of the Shoppes at Beachwalk retail center anchored by Publix Super Markets.

It will be the fifth St. Johns County location for the fast-casual chain.

The 3,220-square-foot restaurant will have a drive-thru and 40 parking spaces, according to plans. The county approved the project Sept. 15 at a project cost of $400,000.

BDG Architects is the architect. Prosser Inc. is the civil engineer. Ladson Construction is the contractor.

Beachwalk Center LLC of Boca Raton is the property owner.

The location will employ as many as 60 people, the restaurant said in a May 14 news release.

The bakery-cafe will join other area restaurant chains, including Zaxbys, Culver’s, Dunkin’ and Grumpy’s.

Panera has been opening stand-alone restaurants with drive-thrus as it transitions from in-line locations in strip shopping centers.
