The off-price retailer could lease the space after the office-supplies retailer shuts its doors July 23.
Staples intends to close July 23 at St. Johns Town Center and Marshalls is looking at leasing the space for a clothing and merchandise retail store.
Marshalls intends to occupy the space, a city building permit application shows.
Staples, a national office supplies and services retailer, posted signs on its windows about its clearance sale of 75% off in-store purchases and the July 23 closing. Posted hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
The copy and print center is closed. Staples directs customers to stores at 5800 Beach Blvd. near University Boulevard South; 11111 San Jose Blvd. in Mandarin; and 4016 S. Third St. at Jacksonville Beach. It also has stores in Orange Park, St. Augustine and Fernandina Beach.
Framingham, Massachusetts-based Staples Inc. did not respond to emails requesting comment.
Staples operates more than 1,000 stores in the U.S. and has been planning for growth. The chainstoreage.com retail industry news site reported in May that Staples has continued to pursue its acquisition of rival Office Depot.
In January, Office Depot parent company ODP Corp. turned down an offer by Staples to buy the company for $2.1 billion in cash, saying it was unlikely to overcome regulatory challenges, the news site reported.
It reported that in a letter detailing the response and rejection of the offer, ODP said it was open to a reworking of the deal, including combining their retail operations.
The building-permit application for Marshalls shows build-out of a shell space at 10261 River Marsh Drive in the corner of the center where Staples operates.
No contractor is identified for the estimated $415,000 project.
Marshalls has six area stores in North and West Jacksonville, Mandarin, Jacksonville Beach, Orange Park and St. Augustine.
“Marshalls has not announced a new store for the Jacksonville location at this time,” Carly Lucas, marketing manager of TJX Marshalls, said by email July 8.
TJX acquired Marshalls in 1995. The TJX Companies Inc. also owns T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods and other brands.
The company, also based in Framingham, Massachusetts, says it is the leading off-price retailer of apparel and home fashions in the U.S. and worldwide with more than 4,600 stores.
T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods each have five area stores.
